Healthy Diet

Healthy Planet

A diet that’s good for the planet is also good for you. Many people today want to make healthier food choices. At the same time, there is growing interest in eating in ways that are more sustainable for the planet.

Encouragingly, research suggests these two goals often align.

The typical diet in many high-income countries tends to include large amounts of red meat, processed foods, refined grains, sugar, and unhealthy fats, while often lacking fiber and plant-based foods. This dietary pattern has been linked to conditions such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

At the same time, food production has a major environmental impact. Agriculture uses significant amounts of land and water and contributes substantially to global greenhouse gas emissions.

The EAT-Lancet diet was developed as a model for a healthier and more sustainable way of eating. This approach focuses primarily on plant-based foods, including:

  • whole grains
  • legumes
  • nuts
  • fruits and vegetables
  • healthy unsaturated oils

Animal products are still included, but generally in smaller amounts.

A recent study published in The Lancet Planetary Health examined how this dietary pattern affects nutrient intake. Researchers analyzed data from 25,970 participants and evaluated intake levels for 17 essential nutrients.

The findings showed that people who followed the EAT-Lancet diet more closely had overall higher nutrient intake. Most micronutrients met or exceeded recommended levels, and the risk of deficiencies in nutrients such as folate, selenium, and zinc appeared to be lower.

Previous research has also linked this dietary pattern with lower risks of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and premature death.

These findings highlight an important message: a diet that supports environmental sustainability can also support long-term human health.

Choosing more plant-based foods, whole grains, nuts, and vegetables can be a simple step toward both personal wellness and a healthier planet.
