Parkinson’s and
Gut Health
Parkinson’s disease affects at least 1% of people over 60 around the world. A surprising new study suggests points to novel new help.
Parkinson’s disease is a neurogenerative disorder with physical and psychological symptoms. Physical symptoms include muscle tremours and rigidity, slurred speech, slowing of movement, balance and coordination difficulties, constipation, bladder problems, loss of sense of smell, and loss of facial expression.
Psychological symptoms can include depression, memory loss, and dementia. A meta-analysis has found the unexpected result that people with Parkinson’s have a different gut microbial profile than people without. The altered gut bacteria environment leads to significantly decreased metabolism of vitamins B2 and biotin.
This finding suggests that people with Parkinson’s who have gut dysbiosis may benefit from supplementing the two B vitamins.
