Omega 3 and Pregnancy:
Supporting Healthy Births
Proper nutrition plays an important role during pregnancy, supporting both maternal health and the development of the baby.
Omega-3 essential fatty acids are well known for their benefits for heart health, brain development, and inflammation balance. Increasingly, research is also exploring their potential role in supporting healthy pregnancy outcomes.
A recent study published in Frontiers in Nutrition examined whether adding omega-3 fatty acids to prenatal vitamins could help reduce the risk of preterm birth. The study included 9,461 pregnant women and compared those who took standard prenatal vitamins with those who also supplemented with omega-3 essential fatty acids.
The results were significant. Women who added omega-3 supplements were 36% less likely to experience a preterm birth. They were also 35% less likely to give birth to babies who were small for their gestational age. These findings suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may play an important role in supporting healthy pregnancy outcomes.
While many prenatal vitamins contain a wide range of essential nutrients, omega-3 fatty acids are not always included. Research like this highlights the potential value of adding omega-3 as part of a balanced prenatal nutrition plan.
