Love Pecans. Love Your Heart.

Heart Health Provides One More Reason to Love Pecans

Pecans are often enjoyed for their rich, buttery flavor — whether eaten on their own or baked into classic desserts. But beyond their taste, pecans also offer an impressive range of nutritional benefits.

Pecans are one of the few tree nuts that are native to North America, and they have long been valued as a traditional food by Indigenous communities across the continent.

Nutritionally, pecans are packed with healthy unsaturated fats, fiber, protein, and essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium. They also provide smaller amounts of iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and boron.

In addition to these nutrients, pecans contain a wide range of plant compounds and antioxidants, including polyphenol flavonoids like ellagitannins, catechins, and proanthocyanidins. These compounds help support overall health by protecting the body from oxidative stress.

A recent scientific review published in Nutrients examined research on pecans from 2000 to 2025. The findings suggest that including pecans in the diet may help improve overall diet quality and support heart health.

Despite the long-standing myth that nuts contribute to weight gain, the research did not find an increased risk of overweight or obesity with pecan consumption.

One of the most significant benefits observed was related to cholesterol levels. Studies showed that pecans may help lower:

  • total cholesterol
  • LDL (“bad”) cholesterol
  • triglycerides
  • apolipoprotein B

Some research also suggests that pecans may help increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol.

Together, these findings support pecans as a heart-healthy food that can be a delicious addition to a balanced diet.
