Probiotics and Fertility?

New Research Offers Hope

Infertility affects an estimated 10–14% of couples worldwide, and in many cases the cause remains unexplained. For couples facing this challenge, new areas of research continue to explore possible ways to support reproductive health.

One emerging area of interest involves the role of the human microbiome.

Researchers have suggested that the balance of beneficial bacteria in the body — including the genital tract microbiota — may influence reproductive health. This has led scientists to explore whether probiotics may help support fertility outcomes.

A recent double-blind clinical study examined this possibility in couples experiencing unexplained infertility.

In the study, 57 couples preparing to undergo IVF treatment were given either a placebo or a probiotic containing Lactobacillus salivarius.

Both partners took the probiotic for six months prior to IVF and during the first IVF cycle.

The results were notable. 48% of couples in the probiotic group achieved a successful pregnancy resulting in a healthy live birth, compared with 20% in the placebo group.

While more research will continue to explore these findings, the study suggests that supporting a healthy microbiome may play an important role in reproductive health.
